Reading over my last couple of posts, I'm wondering how I kept my tone so calm...perhaps it's because I was writing on Day 1 and at the end of Week 1, respectively.
We're now almost 2 weeks past when we were supposed to be done. I think there is at least 2 more weeks of work, though I've been told numerous times at the end of each week by my dear husband and the dear contractor that things will move quickly once (fill in the blank) is done. Things haven't really moved quickly.
However, there is progress. There are walls in the bathroom, around the stairs, and around the perimeter of the basement. In the bathroom, there is a shower, a toilet, and a functioning sink. Doors are going in today. There are working electrical switches. We have an egress window, a waterproofed basement, insulation, and half of the house has new gutters. During this time, Andrew and I also bought a new couch (custom!) which was delivered Monday.
Those things are good.
But 6 weeks of a 3-week project...oh Lord, that's too long. On Monday night, after I threw a temper tantrum about how I'm sick of living in 5 cluttered rooms (our house wasn't that big to begin with - feels a lot smaller when the other half of your living space is shuttered up!), Andrew and I went through the living room and dining room removing all the extra stuff that had found its way there during renovation. DVDs went up to the attic, extra candles got boxed up, all the boxes that had been in the dining room went to the guest room, etc. At the end of about 30 mins of moving stuff, at least 2 rooms looked back to normal. It felt good. I am getting so antsy for the whole house to get back to normal.
Which doesn't seem to be happening soon. Apparently, our contractor had to meet with a plastic surgeon yesterday because he sanded off part of his finger (I can't even think that without shuddering...how absolutley painful! Ouch, ouch, ouch). If I were him, frankly, I'd take a few days off, not a few hours.
And there's a lot left to be done. We've decided on painting the ceiling white (after waffling a million times). There's some electrical for the new lighting. Walls to go up for the pantry (bedroom is no longer getting a wall) and 2 closets. I've learned that drywall takes a couple of days. Then after that, doors get installed, WE paint the walls, and then carpet goes in, and then the trim goes on. And then after that, all of our stuff comes back in. And then we can do laundry again (somehow I think we will be making that 3rd trip to the laundrimat...or buying more undies).
I don't think I'll be sitting back and saying "All done!" until mid-June. Gosh, maybe later - there's a lot of stuff in that attic.
